What the United States has done has seriously eroded the authority, seriousness and effectiveness of the international law, said a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman.
The spokesman, Lu Kang, made the statement at a regular press briefing Monday in response to what the former U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said that it would be a “dangerous beginning” if any side, the Philippines and China, refuses to observe the results of the so-called South China Sea arbitration.
Lu said: “Some people of the United States always profess to be the safeguard of the law of the sea. Yet, it has not yet approved the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 34 years after the convention was reached. It has time and again demanded other countries to accept the solution by a third party, yet it has tried to avoid it and even gone so far as to refuse the verdict and orders issued by the UN major judicial organ — the International Court. Time and again, it has demanded other countries to abide by the international law, yet it and its so-called allies have opened the door to law violation. For long, it has turned a blind eye to the illegal occupation by the Philippines of some islands and reefs of China’s Nansha Islands.”
