Japan’s role in South China Sea getting bigger

The Japanese government is now expanding its role in world stage as it forge a stronger bilateral defense cooperation and exchanges with Philippine though a established Strategic Partnership. Japan is also set to supply Philippines and Vietnam with patrol boats.

Last January 29, Philippines’ and Japan’s defense secretaries signed “Memorandum on Defense Cooperation and Exchanges between the Ministry of Defense of Japan and the Department of National Defense of the Republic of the Philippines” that will facilitate closer relationship between Japan Self-Defense Forces and Armed Forces of the Philippines in security and defense field.

Among the activities Philippines and Japan will undertake are regular high level defense and military officials meetings. Philippine Navy and Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force will conduct naval training this year based on Code for Unplanned Encounters at Sea.
