Ex-Palace spox sees heightened US interest on SCS

The United States under President-elect Joe Biden is expected to show heightened interest over the South China Sea, former presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said Monday.

“There will be a heightened emphasis on South China Sea towards freedom of navigation,” Lacierda said during an interview on CNN Philippines.

Lacierda said that “30 percent of the world’s trade fly through the South China Sea.”

Though the administration of President Donald Trump has “more or less adopted an isolationist policy, he clarified that “the US military has not neglected its role.”

“Hopefully this new presidency on the part of the Biden administration will give more emphasis towards us,” said Lacierda, despite the policy shift of President Duterte for the Philippines to be friendlier to China and Russia.
