The 1Sambayan coalition has issued a statement expressing its unwavering support for Defense Secretary Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. following the sanctions imposed against him by the Chinese government.
In its statement, the coalition described the sanctions as an attempt to intimidate a Philippine official who has consistently defended the country’s sovereignty and sovereign rights. According to 1Sambayan, Secretary Teodoro has remained steadfast in advancing the Philippines’ position on issues affecting the West Philippine Sea and in upholding the country’s national interests.
The coalition emphasized that defending Philippine sovereignty is not an act of provocation but a fundamental duty of public officials. It further asserted that standing up for the country’s territorial integrity and maritime rights should be respected rather than punished.
1Sambayan also reiterated its support for the Philippines’ adherence to international law and the rules-based international order in addressing disputes in the West Philippine Sea. The group maintained that the country’s lawful exercise of its sovereign rights must continue despite external pressure.
The statement comes amid continuing tensions in the West Philippine Sea, where maritime security, freedom of navigation, and the protection of sovereign rights remain key issues of national concern.
As developments unfold, the coalition called on Filipinos to remain united in supporting efforts to safeguard Philippine sovereignty and uphold the nation’s rights under international law.
